       Research Cassimere

The newspaper entries below were taken from The Richmond Daily Dispatch.
In these arcticles and advertisements may be found references to the fabric known as Cassimere. In an effort to show the use of Cassimere during the war, not only by military forces, I have drawn from both Military and Civilian references.

Outfit for War.
The volunteer companies in Charleston are preparing for "field operations." The Mercury publishes the following as the outfit of the Washington Light Infantry, a company numbering 85 men. It is interesting to our military friends:

Single-breasted frock coat, of cadet grey cassimere; one row Palmetto buttons on front. Pants same material, with black stripe inch wide on outer seams. Overcoat same material, army pattern, with cape, &c. Leggins of calf-skin, to lace up as high as the calf of the leg, and to fit snugly over the feet. Belt of black patent leather, with buckle, &c.--Knapsack — a very simple kind, similar to those worn by the Swiss guides, (without the usual wooden frame.) Haversack — enamelled cloth, with leather straps, &c. Canteen of gutta perchs, to hold two quarts — an entirely new article; it fits the person comfortably, and keeps the water pure and fresh.

Rubber cloth--one piece, three feet wide and six feet long to each man — an indispensable article to light troops. Blankets — plain grey-- 5 pt. mackinaw, 3 ½ lbs. in weight. Hat — plain felt, brownish color, looped upon left side. Two pairs winter drawers, two colored flannel shirts, two pairs woolen socks, one extra pair shoes (heavy soles.)

They have also provided twelve rubber caps with capes for the guard in rainy weather, which, with the piece of rubber cloth already alluded to, will keep the men perfectly dry.--Each officer is armed with a revolver and provided with a pocket compass. The captain is provided, in addition, with a field glass.

In addition to this complete outfit, there have been provided India rubber mattresses, pillows, and blankets lined with rubber cloth, India rubber bottles (pints and quarts) for medicines. These are intended for the comfort of the sick, if any there be. Their camp buckets and other utensils are also of rubber goods. The company are daily expecting one hundred improved stand of arms, with cartridge boxes, cap pouches, etc

Sale of Woolen goods.
The sale of a large lot of cloth, cassimeres, &c., manufactured at the Crenshaw Woolen Mills, took place yesterday, at one of the stores under the Spotswood House, and was attended by a number of dealers from Petersburg, Lynchburg and Norfolk. The fabrics elicited the universal commendation of all the dealers present. In consequence, however, of the lateness of the season, a preference was given to thin goods, and but a small quantity, comparatively, of the heavy cloth was disposed of. The sale was made more for the purpose of introducing the goods to the market than anything else, and in that view was successful. We have seen some splendid specimens of broadcloth, and doeskin cassimere, lately made at the above mills, which would bear favorable comparison with the best French fabrics

Magnanimous and patriotic manufacturers

In these times of war and all its wonderful vicissitudes and extortions, it, is a relief to hear and know of men who are magnanimous as well as patriotic. The proprietors of the celebrated Rock Island Factory, Charlotte, N. C., furnish their manufactured cassimere and jeans to the army of their noble State at the usual price, with only at least the difference of the advance of the raw wool, while their goods are in great demand now at one hundred per cent, advance, readily and thankfully.

It is eminently due to Messrs. Young, Winston & Orr, the manufacturers above alluded to, to say, while they are represented on the field of battle, they have sent to this city $150 for the sick and wounded soldiers of the Southern Confederacy

John H. Morgan.
A correspondent of the Louisville Express gives the following description of Morgan as he appeared at Georgetown:

He mingled unarmed among the motley crowd collected to view the great bugbear of the age. His dress was plain, with no military insignia but a sin- gle row of buttons on his well fitting cavalry jacket of mixed green and gray cassimere, which he wore unbuttoned. He wore no vest, and had on a black silk watch-guard and diamond pin. His hat was a black felt, pinned up on the left side, and ornamented with a crescent of quilled work in porcupine or palm leaf. His carriage was graceful, but all the time he seemed more busied in looking after his command — the minutest details of which seemed not to escape him — than thinking of the figure he cut.

Another blockade auction.
A large amount of valuable merchandize, a part of which was a portion of the cargo of the steamer Kate, was sold at auction in Charleston, S. C., Monday. The Kate was sunk in the Cape Fear river by a snag, after passing the dangers of the blockade, and her goods were mostly quite wet. Relieving a tailor shop.
Yesterday morning the Mayor had before him a number of negroes, charged with stealing and receiving several hundred dollars worth of cloths and clothing, the property of Mr. Geo. R. Howard, a merchant tailor. These goods were taken at different times within the past twelve months, and the amount carried off cannot possibly be clearly ascertained. William, slave to L. Hopkins, seems to have been the principal thief, he having had access to Mr. H.'s shop. The articles set down to him are nine yards of black cloth worth $400, a cloth coat worth $250, nine yards of cassimere worth $260, two yards of silk velvet worth $50, and many other items. Branch, slave to Thomas Bass, received the coat; William, slave to R. O. Hakins, received three yards of cassimere and two yards of silk velvet; and Edward, slave to E. Taylor, received nine yards of cassimere. After a careful investigation of all the facts william was sent on the Hustings Court to answer for the theft, and the other parties were all sent on to answer for receiving the goods from William, knowing them to have been stolen.

Five hundred dollars reward.
Ran away from my residence, the Carlton House, Sidney, the slave of Major J. J. Parham, of Tennessee. He has been in my service since last January. Last year he was hired as an officer's servant in the Western army. This boy is a brought mulatto, of rather spare build, about twenty years of age; five feet ten or eleven inches high, without beard. When spoken to, be usually puts on a stupid air, dropping his eyelids and jaw, and pouting his lips. He pretends to a slouching although brisk enough when he chooses. He is a good hostler and fair cook. When last seen at home, at 6 o'clock P M., Sunday, the 11th instant, he had on a grey cassimere sack coat, blue pantaloons, a drab felt hat, and army cloth shoes, much worn. Is supposed to have taken with him a heavy woolen drab oversack. The above reward will be paid on his delivery to me in person.

Heavy Robbery and arrest of Parties Implicated.
A few days since, Mr. Joseph Brumme having occasion to examine some papers which he had deposited in a box in which he had a large amount of gold and silver and Confederate money, discovered that he had been robbed of about three thousand dollars in specie, besides several thousand more in paper money. Suspicion resting upon a negro girl in his employ, he had her brought before him, and questioned her about the matter, when she acknowledged her guilt, but stated that she had given the most of what she had stolen to two negro fellows who had been visiting her, by the name of Ralph, slave of W. B. Turner, and Willis, slave of Richard James. These negroes were arrested, and upon searching their rooms and persons, there was found about one hundred and seventy-five dollars in gold coin, one thousand two hundred dollars in Confederate notes, a gold watch and chain, and one trunk and a valise crammed with an assortment of new clothing which could not be purchased, at present prices, for less than five or six thousand dollars. One of the negroes, upon whom was found five twenty-dollar gold pieces and seven hundred and fifty dollars in Confederate notes, acknowledged receiving from Mr. Brummel's girl thirty-seven twenty-dollar gold pieces, two of which he had invested with L. Schumann for a gold watch and chain, and the balance he had exchanged for Confederate money and purchased clothing with. From the preparations which these negroes had made, there is very little doubt that they meditated levanting to the Yankees. In the trunk and valise which were found in their room, there was packed away some ten pairs of French (fancy) cassimere pants, several fine dress and business cloth and ? cassimere ? coats, one dozen white and colored linen shirts (never worn), the finest black cassimere hats, several ladies dress patterns, a large and varied assortment of gentlemen's collars, one dozen pairs of drawers, neck-ties, one splendid beaver cloth overcoat, and a miscellaneous collection of toilet soaps, hair, clothes and shoe brushes, &c., &c. They were taken before the Mayor yesterday, who promptly remanded them for examination before the Husting Court upon bearing the evidence against them.
